COVID-19 Update

COVID-19 Update - Disability Services

1 May 2020

Dear Disability Services residents, families and friends,

I hope you and your families are keeping well.

What a busy and challenging time we have had during the COVID-19 pandemic. Throughout it all, minimising the risks to our customers, staff and the wider community have and always will be our top priorities. I am extremely thankful to our customers, families and staff for maintaining social distancing and infection control principles.

Thank you to everyone for cooperating with the visiting restrictions and playing your part to assist in ‘flattening of the curve’.

Royal Rehab continues to monitor and follow the guidelines from both state and federal health authorities. The latest recommendations we are following are outlined below.

Visitor restrictions

Staff and visitors should not enter the facility if they:

  • have returned from overseas in the past 14 days
  • had contact with a confirmed case of COVID-19 in the last 14 days
  • have not been vaccinated against influenza (after 1 May 2020)
  • have fever or symptoms of acute respiratory infection (e.g. cough, sore throat, runny nose, shortness of breath).
  • Feel unwell in any way.

NSW Health recommends that anyone with respiratory symptoms or unexplained fever should be tested for COVID-19.

Additionally, please be advised as per the guidelines of NSW Health:

Family and friends who intend to visit our homes or facilities are advised to comply with the following recommendations of NSW Health:

  • Limit visits to a short duration.
  • Limit visits to a maximum of two visitors at one time per day.
  • Children aged 16 years or younger should not be permitted to visit as they are generally unable to comply with hygiene measures. Exemptions to this can be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
  • Visits should be conducted in the resident’s room, outdoors, or in a specific designated area, rather than in communal areas where the risk of transmission to other residents is greater.
  • All visitors should be encouraged to practice social distancing where possible, including maintaining a distance of 1.5 metres.

We encourage you to stay connected with your loved ones via phone and video calls.

Hand/respiratory hygiene and social distancing

The following measures continue to help protect against the spread of COVID-19. When visiting any of the houses please:

  • Wash your hands or use hand sanitiser on entry and exit of our homes and facilities.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with your bent elbow or tissue when you cough or sneeze. Then dispose of the used tissue immediately.
  • When you visit the houses please write your name in the house attendance / visitors book.
  • For those that visit the Hospital please note that you will be screened and have your temperature checked before entry.

Personal protective equipment

We are following advice from NSW Health on use of personal protective equipment. The use of masks and gowns is not required to perform standard care on well people. It is only for use when an infection is confirmed or there is a suspected risk.

You can be assured that Royal Rehab has access to personal protective equipment should a suspected outbreak occur.

In event of an outbreak

In the event of an outbreak, Royal Rehab will immediately notify NSW Health Public Health Unit and will follow all directives on how to best manage and contain the situation.

Over the last couple of weeks, I have contacted a number of families advising of potential COVID testing and changes to visiting circumstances. I would like to thank those families for being receptive and understanding of the changing circumstances.

COVIDSafe app logo

The government has launched the COVIDSafe app to help health officials quickly contact people who may have been exposed to COVID-19. The app is part of the government’s work to slow the spread of the disease. Downloading the app is something you can do to protect yourself, your family and friends and save the lives of other Australians. You can download the app via the Apple App Store or Google Play.

Thanking you

I would again like to thank everyone for their continued support and for adapting to the significant changes and restrictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. It is through everyone’s hard work of following hygiene and social distancing restrictions, that we will minimise the risks to our customers, staff and wider community.

Should you have any questions or queries please feel free to contact me on 0417 046 136 or if I can be of any assistance.
